Interviewing at Google: best practices, advice, and tips

There are certain things you can do to properly prepare for an interview. Let’s walk through them.

Find connections between the job listing and your resume: First off, re-read your resume and the job description to help you draw lines between the two. Where do they connect? We want you to take every opportunity to set yourself up for success.

Focus on data: As you start to think about things you want to highlight in your interview, don’t forget to include data.

Look back at past work experiences: You should also go back through your own work history. That may not sound like something you need to prepare for, but most of us have done more than we think and it’s easy to forget some of our own wins (and lessons from mistakes). We want you to be calm and confident.

Come ready with questions: Next, come to the interview with your own questions. This not only shows you care about understanding Google and the position you’re applying for, but it’s also a testament to the research you’ve done by looking into our company.

Prepare for the day of

OK, done — well, almost done. What about the day of? Here are a few tips to take full advantage of the time.

Make sure your space is ready for video: If you’re doing a virtual interview, take some time to prepare your space. Find a quiet area with good internet connection where you won’t be disturbed. Check your mic, your video, and your Wi-Fi, to make sure that everything is in working order. We also recommend including a notebook and a pen or pencil in your gear (sometimes it’s easier to scribble than type). And if you need assistive technology or any other accommodation, set that up, or let us know and we’ll be happy to help.

Talk through your answers to show your thinking: When we’re talking with you about your work and the position in question, express your ideas, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to work the problem with us. Why? Because the questions often leave room for clarification.

Collect your thoughts: Ask for a minute to collect your thoughts if you need it — write it out if it helps clarify.

Be mindful of the time you have: Keep an eye on the time — it’ll fly by.

Take a breath. Seriously. People forget to breathe sometimes!

We appreciate you taking the time to chat with us, and want this to be a conversation that helps answer some of your questions too.
